Metz, a sports-loving city
With Metz Football Club, in Division 1 since 1967, Mez is well-known
for football. Metz FC are:
- twice winners of the French Cup, in 1984 and 1988,
- winner of the League Cup in 1996,
- French runnners-up in 1998,
Metz has a very impressive sporting record, which has been highlighted
below.

Other clubs also play a role in the citys sporting reputation :
- The ASPTT ladies handball team in the National 1 league, holders
of 8 French championships, with 5 of them in consecutive years, 3
times winners of the French Cup. Their performance in 1999 is well
worthy of note, with the cup/championship double and semi-finals in
the European Cup against Oslo. 6 of the players play in the French
team.
- The SMEC table tennis team, in the Super Division for 12 years,
taking part in the European Cup 11 times, the club that organised
the 1998 final of the European League between France and Austria.
- The ASPTT mens tennis team, French champions in the National
1A league, and European champions in 1998.
- The ASPTT Athletics club, with Bob TAHRI, Junior European
champion in the 5,000 metres, several times French cross-country champion,
French champion in the 1,500 m steeplechase, holder of the French
hopefuls record in the 1,500 m, 3,000 m, 5,000 m and 3,000 m steeplechase.

ASPTT ladies handball : a winning team
Metz can also boast numerous amateur clubs including some which are particularly
well-known :
- The Metz Regatta club, classified 24th French club (13th for
the ladies) out of 326 clubs affiliated to the FFSA, the club of Christine
GOSSE, bronze medallist in the Atlanta Olympics, World Champion.
- The RS Magny football club, ranked 10th amongst French amateur
clubs and the first Lorraine club after FC Metz and AS Nancy Lorraine.

Every year Metz holds a number of highly successful sporting events :
the Metz half-marathon and the "Randonnée des Lavoirs"
mountain bike race with over 2,000 participants.

one of the finest urban courses in France
- The University World Canoeing-Kayaking Championships, on one of the
finest urban courses in France.
- In addition a Metz team reached the eigth stage of the against the
clock element of he Tour de France on the 11th July 1999.
